Surfers Paradise, Australia
Surfers Paradise is a very interesting place. It’s a mix of families who are on holiday and people who go to get drunk. Much like Blackpool or Skegness! An entertaining mix to say the least… We had lots of fun people watching in Surfers. Surfers paradise is well known for, well, surfing! If you catch it on a good day the waves are amazing, although when we were there it was rolling in at about 1/8th of a foot! If you’re in the area for a while, travel further south towards Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta for a better and more consistent break.
There are heaps of hostels to choose from in Surfers Paradise as it’s a popular backpacker location. We chose to stay in an Airbnb while we were there but here is a list of some of the great hostels in the area:
- Surf’n’sun backpackers
- Down under hostels
- Surfers paradise backpackers
- Buds in surfers backpacker resort
- Backpackers in paradise
We got a great Airbnb where we had our own room and space to ourselves which worked out cheaper for two of us than staying in a double room at a hostel. If you’re travelling as a couple it’s always worth checking Airbnb out before you book because sometimes you might be surprised by what you can get! The house we stayed at was in a great location a short walk away from the beach and public transport. It really adds value to our travels when we meet and live with the locals; we got so much insider knowledge and tips to make our stay better. What to do in Surfers Paradise
Surfers is jam packed with exciting activities. There are arcades everywhere as well as information booths selling trips to the various theme parks nearby. You won’t be lost for things to do in Surfers Paradise, that’s for sure. We first booked to stay for a week but after looking at the long list of things we wanted to do we had to extend for another four days to make sure we could fit it all in, so keep that in mind when you’re planning!
One of the best things we did in Surfers was go up to the top of the famous skyscraper – Sky Point! We decided to go up just before sunset so that we could see the city in daylight and night light; it was certainly an amazing experience watching the sun go down and seeing the long shadows from the buildings nearby. We stayed up there until it got dark and watched the city come to life! We highly recommend going up to the top (even though it’s quite pricey) it’s so worth it! For the thrill seekers, you can even harness up and climb the outdoor staircase to the very highest point, then lean backwards over the streets below. It might be best not to look down for that one!
If you have a rainy day like we did then make sure you go and have a game (or three) of mini golf! There were so many places to choose from, the one we went to had some glow in the dark sections! We had loads of fun and it kept us from getting bored on an overcast day.
Make sure you go jet skiing in the mangroves! After our previous experience jet skiing in Airlie we didn’t even hesitate to book and go again! We had an amazing action packed day full of crazy turning and splashing! The tour took us to Stradbroke Island where we were able to go for a swim and a nice refreshing drink before heading back to the mainland. It was such a great day!
Another awesome thing to do while you’re in Surfers is Infinity. It’s a really cool and unique experience where you are in the dark and have to find your way back out of the puzzle. There are all sorts of rooms, from mazes, to rooms that make you look like you’re floating; it definitely brings out your inner child!
There are heaps of theme parks to go to near Surfers Paradise including Dream world, Movie World and Wet n wild! We went to Dreamworld all and had soooo much fun on all of the rides. It’s always worth looking into special offers and sometimes you can get tickets to more than one park for cheaper than usual. During our stay there was also a deal to go to one of the theme parks and go up the Sky Point tower, which made Sky Point cost around $4 instead of $20+.
If you’re a fan of the V8 Supercars, then you must go to see the race track! We went and stood on one of the track’s corners and walked some of the track; Dom loved it! If you’re there at the right time (early October) you might even be able to watch the race!
If you love to party then Surfers Paradise is your place! When you walk down the streets there are people all over giving you vouchers for discounted drinks and free entry, so be sure to make use of them. There are so many nightclubs, you wont be spoilt for choice.
You could go on a trip to to South Stradbroke island for the day and have an action packed day of sandboarding and driving segways and sand buggys! We had a blast when we went and highly recommend going, the tour company we went with was called Gold Cost Island Buggy tours.
