Melbourne is a vibrant city bursting with life! We found it to be a lot more fancy than Sydney or any other city we’ve been to and we couldn’t believe how busy it was! The city it’s self is absolutely huge and is spread out across a few different suburbs each offering something unique and different.
There are so many hostels to stay at in Melbourne, but be aware that because of it’s reputation they can be pretty price just like Sydney! Here are a few great hostels that you can stay at while you explore Melbourne:
- Melbourne Metro YHA
- Melbourne Central YHA
- Nomads Melbourne
- Nomads All Nations
- King Street Backpackers
When we stayed we decided to rent a room with airbnb in a little suburb called saint Kilda, the house we stayed at was in the middle of all the action and was so much cheaper than any other accommodation options in the area. St Kilda is only a short tram ride away from the city centre it’s self. We got lots of advice from our hosts about where to go in Melbourne which was very useful, we absolutely love airbnb and recommend it to everyone! What to do in Melbourne
If you do find yourself in St Kilda then go for a walk to Albert park to see the F1 track you can see the paint on the roads, but unfortunately can’t really drive around it the police had barricades up to try and stop people from racing! If you time it right you might be able to watch a race!
Saint Kilda is home the famous beach which is aptly named St Kilda beach! The beach it’s self can be absolutely packed as it one of the most popular ones in Melbourne, but it has a wonderful atmosphere about it.
If you have a car you are able to drive to Ramsay street yourself for free but unfortunately they do take the sign down, the street is actually called … yo will find a security guard in his car who is very kind and will gladly take photos of you which is lovely. I think if you’re an avid neighbours fan a tour would be a much better option as the street comes to life and they will give you more information than going alone!
When you go for a wander around the city head down some of the famous graffiti streets, the best ones are Hosier lane, Yarra street and Union lane. You might even spot someone creating a new work of art like we did! Some of the art work is amazing and some very controversial, we think it’s amazing and adds so much character to the city.
You can take the tram to the ANZAC monument, in Melbourne city centre the trams are free which makes getting around super easy and accessible. The monument is huge and has amazing views from up at the top if you can be bothered to tackle the steps up!
Somewhere that not many people know about is a little place about an hours drive from Melbourne called Edgars mission, it is very close to our hearts so we just have to give it a mention. They are a wonderful charity that help to rehabilitate farm animals and give them the life they deserve, the tours around the farm are completely free and they run entirely on donations. If you wanted something a little different to do with your day then we highly recommend going.
Melbourne is best known for it’s vibrant nightlife, there are tons of amazing bars are restaurants to go to as well as nightclubs and festivals. One of the best things about Melbourne is the amount of bars that have live music, it is such a wonderful atmosphere and makes for a great night out.
Visit the Organ pipes which are a natural phenomenon, they are a set of basalt columns formed by the cooling and cracking of molten lava, they are very unique and pretty. We drove to the park and had a little walk around, it was a nice break from city life.
I’m sure there sooo many more things to do Melbourne that I’ve missed off this list but that’s the beauty of travel, you’ve gotta go and experience it yourself! If there is anything you love about Melbourne or any places you can recommend yourself then please leave us a comment below.
